What is a Fiducial Marker?

A fiducial marker is a precision-machined reference component placed in the palatal tissue during scanning. It provides a fixed geometric reference point that allows our software to align pre-surgery and post-surgery scans with micron-level accuracy.

Placement

How Markers Are Placed

Fiducial markers are secured directly into the palatal tissue, creating stable reference points that remain fixed between scans.

Intraoral Placement

Markers are placed in the hard palate area, where they remain stable and visible across multiple scans. The palatal tissue provides a secure, immobile base that ensures the reference points don't shift between pre-surgery and post-surgery captures.

Digital Scan Capture

Once placed, the markers appear in the digital scan as distinct metallic geometric shapes. Their precise, machined geometry allows our software to identify them automatically and use them as anchor points for alignment.

3D Alignment & Registration

The fiducial markers create a bridge between two separate scans — the pre-surgery tissue scan and the post-surgery implant scan. Our software identifies the same markers in both datasets and uses them to register the two scans in 3D space.

Each marker appears as a numbered point in both scans. The software draws virtual connections between corresponding points and calculates the optimal alignment transformation, resulting in a perfectly registered composite model.
